My Students

We are the cast and crew of Dracula! Our high school's Theater Workshop is putting up this play in April, and we want to make it fantastic. To do this, we are in need of your help, so thank you!

Our students are a diverse group of Brooklyn residents, many of whom are first-generation Americans.

There are twenty students in the cast, and forty students in the crew of Dracula; they rehearse and create theater magic twice a week after school. Since our students crave an outlet for their creativity and social energies, our Theater Workshop trains them for theater and trains them for life. We help our cast and crew juggle all of their responsibilities: we have several teachers working together with kids as they learn lines, pass classes, and manage their time efficiently.

My Project

The students are creating a snow storm on stage to enhance a pivotal death scene. The white and red feathers will spill from the rafters as the fog rolls in from the wings. During the scene change, our stage crew will have to clean up the "snow" quickly with their push brooms and shovels. The costumes will not only make the characters more real for the audience, but will also allow the student-actors to more authentically inhabit their roles.

We have already witnessed the positive impact of Theater Workshop productions on our students' leadership skills, emotional competency, and academic motivation.

For example, when a young man works for stage crew, his creativity and community-building skills make him feel confident and allow him to shine. Building on this success, this young man, who struggles to fulfill his academic responsibilities, has started to arrive at school early for math tutoring.
