My Students

My students are absolutely amazing in every way. Our class is complete with 25 enthusiastic, curious, and animated first graders from a range of cultural and socioeconomic backgrounds. Our class is an integrated co-teaching (ICT) classroom meaning that a portion of our students have special needs. Our needs range from speech and language disorders to autism but none of the labels stop any of the students from trying their hardest and always exceeding expectations. These 25 students are dedicated and excelling in the classroom is the norm!

Our class of students is a unique, clever, determined, and persistent bunch with a range of interests and needs - making each and every lesson new and exciting!

My co-teacher and I take a very hands-on approach to education which allows students to demonstrate their learning in a variety of ways.

My Project

Yoga is a practice that allows individuals to learn self-regulation, work on memory, improve core strength and generally strengthen coping skills. In yoga, you learn how to breath deeply, to reflect and appreciate your body and your mind. These are all skills that are necessary to build well-rounded students that are able to confront not only the academic demands but also the social and personal pressures of the world around them. Our classroom is built on the idea that we are members of a larger community and we all strive to do our best as individuals--what better way to work on these skills than with some daily yoga!

These yoga mats will be used on a daily basis for students to go through a routine that will help them work on self-regulation, deep breathing and overall readiness to learn.

Each student will have their own mat which will help in working on responsibility. Throughout the rest of the year, we will go through different poses and breathing techniques to gain independence in our yoga practice. We will work as a class to build a community of yogis ready to confront the world. We will be strong, determined and even more independent than we already are!
