My Students

The school that I work for is severely under funded. Teachers are given 2 cases of copy paper a year to make all their worksheets, test and labs. I service 147 students and 2 cases is not enough. Last year donors sponsored 4 cases of paper to my class; and now I am asking for a donation for 4 more.

This year I will be serving 147 urban students.

The students that I teach are eager to learn but have horrible organizational and study skills. They are in desperate need of learning these skills in order to become successful high school students. I work for a NYC public school that serves a south Brooklyn community. Many, if not all, of the student come from homes that are well below the poverty standard. Although most of the student body at the school is African American, there is a small population of Caribbean and Middle Eastern English language learners. School supplies at my school is in short supply. At the beginning of the school year, teachers are given 2 cases of copy paper that is to last the school year. These cases are supposed to accommodate my needs for all my exams, quizzes, science labs and homework.

My Project

Next to books, paper is the life and blood of schools. Being a high school science teacher (Biology and Earth Science), my curriculum uses a lot of paper. I use paper for: *guided notes - to help students organize their notebook. *graphic organizers - to help students organize their thoughts. *scientific articles - to help improve students reading abilities. *journals - To help students reflect on what they have just learned. *homework - to help students practice what they just learn. *and of course test and quizzes - to help assess student knowledge.

Students of large urban school tend to struggle with many basic academic skills, such as, reading, note taking, organization and studying.

With your help, I am hoping to change these low performing science students into high performing individuals. As mentioned before, paper is the blood of a school; without it, teaching and learning suffer.
