My Students

Solving a murder mystery in middle school?! My students LOVE the opportunity to help Ingrid, who is also in middle school, crack the case! This is the perfect read-aloud to keep students on the edge of their seat!

I teach 7th grade Reading and Language Arts in a high-poverty rural town in Missouri.

It takes a lot to get my students interested in reading! Our classroom desperately needs high-interest books to keep each student engaged. When I have used "Down the Rabbit Hole" in the past, it has been a major hit with my students! Past students ask if my students this year will GET to read the book!

My Project

In "Down the Rabbit Hole" Ingrid Levin-Hill, 13, finds herself mixed up in a murder mystery where she might actually be considered a suspect! She must use her Sherlock Holmes skills to figure out the true culprit, before it's too late! This book is the perfect read-aloud companion to a "Mystery Festival" unit my students participate in at the end of the year. My students really connect with Ingrid, and they want to be the first to guess the true culprit correctly! I have seen many student's problem solving skills really be put to work and begin developing on a deeper level through reading this book. Having a class set of the book will aid them in comprehension of the text. Comprehension levels increase tremendously when students can HEAR and SEE the text. They will be able to use the the books to investigate for themselves and draw their own conclusions. They're are so engaged in the text that they don't even realize they're learning!

Your help will allow my students to become more fully engaged in their learning.

They will learn problem solving and inferring skills, along with basic reading strategies that increase comprehension. Most importantly, they will have fun in the process!
