My Students

Kindergarteners and 1st graders love to tell stories, especially when they get to show you what happened. A story board and story telling kits will allow my students to act out and explain what their favorite stories are about.

My students are kindergarten and 1st grade students in a high-poverty, low performing school in Philadelphia.

Our school is part of a turnaround effort and our goal for our students is 1.5 years of growth this school year. Our students lack many of the materials that will help them achieve these goals.

My Project

My students are just learning how to think about events in a story, recall important details, and learn to retell in sequential order. The divider, books, and storytelling kits will help them develop early comprehension skills to become better readers. The divider will also act as a partition to keep distractions out. As a student support teacher, I do not have access to a regular classroom. My room is an alternate space in the building made from 2 half walls. Having a divider will help keep my students focused on the lesson and limit distractions from above our walls.

Students with special needs are often easily distracted and a divider like this will create a safe space that can also be utilized for learning.

The books and storytelling kits will help bring their favorite stories to life, while making the divider an important (and fun) part of our classroom.
