Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Imagine trying to teach Environmental Science in the Bronx! Students do not have the contact with nature that suburban or rural students are surrounded by. Field trips are infrequent. I need to bring ecology INTO the classroom so students can learn through first-hand experience!

My school is a unique high school in the Bronx.

We are truly an international community of teachers and students. Our students come from over 20 countries - 50% are English Language Learners. Staff have all spent significant time abroad, as educators or Peace Corps volunteers. We foster an environment of acceptance and celebration of our international origins and collective experiences. Most students live at or below the poverty level and several live in some of the worst neighborhoods in the Bronx but travel up to 1.5 hours to attend school. These students WANT a good education and WANT to go to college. They are rich in cultural and ethnic identity, however, they struggle to reach national academic benchmarks of achievement.

My Project

I am requesting a classroom compost bin. In September, many students will have never heard the words "decomposer" or "compost" but by the end of the year they will be experienced composters! The composter will provide year-round ecology education for 135, 9th grade students for only $110. Not only will they learn about the process and products of decomposition, they will also learn the benefits of reducing landfill waste by composting biodegradable items. The kit is specially designed for the classroom, with a see-through plastic panel so students can watch worms at work on their garbage! It also comes with a DVD and simple instructions on the composter itself.

My students need to learn about ecology through real life experiences, not textbooks.

City living separates us from nature. A compost bin will bring experiential learning into the classroom so what they learn is RETAINED, not lost. In the long-term, I strive to educate students who will become eco-conscious adults and a composter in the perfect tool!
