My classroom is full of fifth graders who are eager to learn and succeed. Even though all these students are the same age, their skills and needs greatly differ. I teach in Utah, a state that is known to have high numbers of students in each classroom. Not only do I have high numbers in my class, but I also have a diverse group of learners.
I have students who function well below grade level in reading and math; I also have students who work well above grade level.
I have students who have a passion for learning, and some who are disconnected from academics. My students come from culturally diverse backgrounds; many students are English Language Learners. To compound challenges, many students are economically disadvantaged.
My Project
Students need more experience with reading and writing to fill in the gaps that have been created by the recent pandemic. I am asking for a classroom novel to read with my students. This novel was specifically picked for my 5th graders because it is good literature, an engaging story, and will provide plenty of opportunities to practice literacy skills and discussion. This novel, Fish in a Tree, has the perfect theme of perseverance and working hard at something that doesn't come easy. I have also included multiple copies of Pop! The Invention of Bubble Gum, George vs George, What is the Constitution, and What is the Declaration of Independence; these books are to specifically teach students how to perform short research skills and how to write informational pieces from their research. The titles that relate to American History were specifically picked to help teach our social studies core as cross-curricular teaching is necessary to get the most out of teaching minutes. These are also great resources for students to practice non-fiction reading skills. The individual copies of picture books are to add to our classroom book a day library. Classroom Book A Day is my students' favorite time of day. I use this time to read a picture book to the entire class. We have genuine conversations about the book and the author's message (theme). This is a time when the playing field is level; all students can access the material and can practice their comprehension strategies because the book is read to them.
My fifth graders have not known a "regular" school year since they were in third grade; please give them the opportunity to have amazing reading resources in the classroom to help them fill in the gaps and feel successful.
