Help Mrs. M.

As a Mock Trial coach and a teacher of Teacher Cadets and Marine Science, I find that the youth of today completely amaze me in their abilities and interest to succeed. Students involved on the Mock Trial Team develop excellent verbal communication skills and often go on to become successful lawyers. Generally, students of MT are also a part of the speech and debate class at our school. This year though others joined due to the positive feedback of former students. Practice is daily and generally in the evenings. Mock Trial is an organization recognized by attorneys across the nation. For the past 8 years, students from our school have won at the regional competition and traveled on to state. This year our team was comprised of mostly 9th and 10th graders, but they soared. Other counties complemented our students and coaches on how well prepared they were in the competition given the fact that they were not as experienced as the majority of the other teams selected for State. (Other teams were made up of mostly seniors who had been on MT for 4 years.) During these proceedings, the students perform as the prosecution and the defense attorney teams in lifelike trial reenactments of historical documented events. Real judges oversee the trial and a jury serves as the competition judges. The students must be prepared to argue/defend their viewpoint from any angle present by the opposing team. Many long hours of practice are required to be able to go to the state competition. Currently, we believe our students have the coaches and community attorney volunteer to prepare them to win next year's state competition and go to the Nationals. Most of our funding has come from out of my pocket and from parents. It is at this time that I ask you for items that we need for preparing next years academic competition in order to be better prepared. These would include: 8 leather file brief cases, 40 legal pads, 50 black ink pens, 20 highlighter markers, 3 lint brushes, 4 packs of colored memo paper (light blue) at 500 sheets per pack, 25 1/2 inch black book binding combs. With these items the students of our Mock Trial team will be 100% in their performance. The MT team usually consists of approximately 20 students. These students are leaders of our school and will be incredible community leaders of tomorrow. It is with experiences like Mock Trial that students of this nature develop.
