Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students are an amazing group of 5th and 6th graders who enjoy learning and who are always full of questions. Regardless of their background or their family demographic, they are just children who love to learn, create, and have fun at school.

My students come from a high poverty neighborhood where more than 75% of them receive free or reduced-price lunch.

There are a very diverse range of home structures: nuclear, single parent, multiple-family, foster, migrant, and military families, to name a few. Our students also come from a variety of ethnic backgrounds, with a large portion being Hispanic, Punjabi and African American. Additionally, we have a large population of English Language Learners. With such diversity, it is to be expected that each student is going to have a very divergent range of personal, social, emotional, and educational needs when compared to schools that serve a more homogeneous population.

My Project

"When given the choice between being right or being kind, choose kind." - R.J. Palacio, Wonder

Many students do not understand or do not want to admit that they understand, how it feels to be made fun of or left out because of character trait that they possess.

"Wonder" tells the story of Auggie, a young man who is different because of rare facial deformity. We will be reading this book as a class and as we are reading we will be discussing the events of the story and how Auggie handles challenges presented to him. Students will then read informational articles on real people who have deformities or disabilities that they have been made fun or for and how those people have respond to challenges and overcome them. The bookshelves will be used to store the books nice and neatly in our classroom.

After all the reading, students will work in groups to create a "Kindness" campaign. Students will help spread awareness of how others are feeling through the use of public service announcements, posters, presentations, and other creative methods. The goal is to spread kindness and encourage others to do the same.
