Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

As a counselor in a low income neighborhood, the challenge to reach students might seem daunting. However, I have some amazing students who make the work of a counselor effortless. Our students hail from an urban New York City neighborhood in the borough of Brooklyn. When you enter my school, there is a vast difference from the world outside its door. In our school, students are safe and enjoy being there. Our students are eager, ambitious, hardworking students who deserve an opportunity to be exposed to ideas and teachings that prepare them for opportunities in the world after school.

My Project

Books can teach students what they need to know!

As a school counselor in an elementary school, I use stories to introduce students to social skills and character building.

Having a library of books that students can refer to when feeling angry or frustrated will allow them to identify with the character and learn ways to adjust their behavior without frequent direction from adults. My students enjoy reading books that they can relate to or learn lessons from. It is through the use of books that I have been able to expand my counseling program to reach more students than I normally would.
