My Students

My students are fantastic, wonderful, amazing, and pleasant fifth graders, and are in their final year of Elementary School! Very soon, they will be off to middle school where they will continue to do wonderful and amazing things in their academic and personal lives!

Despite my students’ strong and sincere zeal for learning, they are daily victims of systemic challenges pertaining to finance, race, and other extraneous variables.

Brownsville, Brooklyn is one of the most economically devastated towns in New York, with 40% of its citizens living below the poverty line (an income of about $20,000 a year for a family of four). Over 75% of my students live in poverty. As a result, my school is a Title I School (according to the United States Department of Education) because of "high numbers or high percentages of children from low-income families." In essence, my students’ unique and highly intelligent minds are not being adequately or equitably educated or bettered due to bureaucratic reasons beyond their or their teachers’ control.

My Project

As cliche as it may sounds: "Breakfast is the most important meal of the day" without a doubt! It inhibits a tiresome morning from meddling with our day's tasks. We must eat some type of breakfast, which is essential to starting the day off productively and with vigor.

There are significant educational challenges associated with students being unable to eat breakfast and thus being unable to thrive in a learning environment.

Due to societal stigmas, my students are presented with daily challenges outside of school. Nonetheless, in school, over 85% of students receive free lunch, and many receive lunch at a reduced fee.

I like to think of my classroom as a "safe space" for my students to feel comfortable, validated, happy, and most importantly, educated daily. However, that cannot always happen due to the difficulties they face outside of school (including in terms of nutrition), which is beyond their control.

In sum, nobody deserves to sit in hunger for numerous hours, especially young children whose jobs are to simply garner as much knowledge as they possibly can. Therefore, funding for this project will permit my students to be 'fully' engaged, after being able to consume a modest amount of breakfast!
