My Students

Do you remember being bored by middle school history classes, wondering why history was so boring and why you were even studying it? History textbooks alone don't tell the whole story of our past. Often textbooks leave out information in order to sell books-that's not fair to our kids!

My students are a diverse and energetic group of kids.

I teach at a public middle school. Many of my students (nearly half this year) are below the poverty line. Some of my students lack books and Internet access at home. Most of my students desperately need to learn to think critically about their world and feel a connection between themselves and the content they learn in school. Textbooks often do no justice to minority struggles and accomplishments in U.S. History. In order to help them understand that history is their experience as well, I need to provide other book sources to their one mainstream textbook. Joy Hakim's books provide another view of history-one that includes ALL the wonderful faces of our past, that can help ALL of my kids feel proud of where they came from and feel a part of the history that built this country.

My Project

If you help fund my project, you will help countless children to feel a part of this country instead of standing on the outside. I feel strongly in incorporating civic values in social studies. By funding this project, you will help to create informed citizens who are inspired to take part in their communities because they will truly understand that they are a part of it.

After seeing so many stories in the news lately about watering down Social Studies curriculum to fit political agendas, I feel it critical that all Social Studies teachers step outside the box to bring multiple perspectives and critical thought to students.

We learn by confronting our history, not ignoring it. Please help me to share this message with my students!
