A chain reaction of support starts with one share.
When I tell people I am a middle school teacher, their knee-jerk reaction is "Wow, that must be scary." "Wow, I am in awe of your patience; kids are awful at that age." And I respond, "These middle schoolers are at a vortex of emotions and that makes for great class discussion." I love teaching and learning with my students. They are highly opinionated, curious, and always compassionate towards their classmates.
And along with their love of speaking their mind, they love questioning authority.
They challenge my thinking on academic and personal views as well. They show me grace when I show my technological age. On a daily basis, my students show me a new computer hack, shortcut, app, and anything else they think I should know about. Even more importantly, they teach about the pronouns they best identify with. My students are eager to be and share their most authentic selves and it is an honor to be along for the ride.
My Project
I see way too many students hunched over staring into their phones and often times, alone during lunch. I see a few of them make their way to the school library as a pretext to find a safe space away from the drama of middle school. During lunch time, I will designate my classroom as a "Calming Space" to any student who wishes to read, play, color, or simply decompress from any stressors of the day. I would like to purchase fun board games to entice some collaborative experience for those who seek it, but are too shy to make friends. On the other hand, I also would like to purchase calm coloring books for those students who just need a quiet moment to themselves. I also included stationary and beautiful pens to inspire letter writing to themselves or others.
I plan to house all the misfits, shy kids, or any soul looking for a safe calming space during lunch.
My lunch time "Calming Corner" will be decked out with comfortable chairs and ambience lighting, with music playing in the background. The only rule will be to leave their phones in their backpack. In this "Calming Corner" they can interact with others playing an engaging board game or stay on their own cuddled in a chair doodling or reading. Whatever they decide to do, what matters most is that they have a safe and calm space to come to during lunch.
