Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Bilingual class 3rd grade; WHAM! - English class 4th grade. This is the challenge facing my ELL students coming to 4th grade. As if the language switch isn't enough, compound it with the requirement of taking the state test in Writing, and not feeling competent to do so.

My students live in a large urban city in Texas, but most of their world is limited to the neighborhood in which they live.

As a result, the sole language they communicate in is Spanish. Their exposure to English is very limited; mostly at school. Our school is 98% Hispanic. For most of the students, school is where they learn and practice English. It is a huge challenge for them to be able to speak English fluently and an even harder challenge for them to write 2 compositions in English for the state test. In my experience as a teacher of ELL students , I find that the earlier a bilingual child is taught English, the more accepting they are and the easier it if for them. Fourth grade is not too late, but the student is not as willing to embrace the change. A way to offset this reluctance is to make the process fun for the student.

My Project

With the materials that I have requested, I hope to make the transition to English easier and fun for my students. I have asked for vocabulary games to use in centers. To be successful on the Writing test, the students need to be able to use grade appropriate vocabulary, and also in order to progress in the English language, they have to increase their knowledge of synonyms, antonyms, homophones, etc. I've also included materials which would allow the emergent learners to be able to practice creating simple sentences before tackling elaborate ones. They will also benefit from the headphones that I need when they practice activities on the computer. Lastly, I would like to make the writing process easier for the students by providing them with a guide for revising and editing their papers. With a booklet for them to refer to as they complete their compositions, the number of errors should be limited thereby improving the overall quality of their paper.

I don't have the easiest job - teaching writing in English to Spanish speaking students, but when I am successful, there is no greater feeling.

It is so gratifying knowing that I have made a difference in students lives. In contrast, I feel as if I have failed if a student is not successful. It's my obligation to the students to do all that I can to give them the opportunity to succeed, but I can't do it alone. That is why I appreciate the help from Donors not for me but for my students..
