My Students

Engaging with musical traditions from countries outside of the U.S. is one of the most important things students can do in a Music classroom. Yet to do so authentically too often presents a logistical challenge.

My 230 musicians this year are an incredibly curious, creative, and diverse bunch.

Our school is only three years old, and every student in the school learns an instrument in the seventh grade. Most choose to continue after. It's an extraordinary space, where students from across one of the most diverse districts in New York come together to make music. As a teacher, I strive to make our musical explorations as diverse as our students. Over the course of a year, we compose, improvise, form classical ensembles, and break into rock bands to write songs. The Music program is growing quickly, but it's hard to get all the different instruments we would like as school budgets plummet.

My Project

There's something just plain wrong about doing Latin music without Latin instruments! This past summer, I traveled to Venezuela to work with musicians across the country. When I returned, I brought back music for my students to play, as well as the knowledge that we absolutely needed to build a rhythm section that included congas, timbales, cowbells, and a host of other instruments. The instruments I am requesting will form the foundation for the music I'm excited to teach. Not only will they really bring students into the sound world of Latin Jazz, these instruments will also provide new challenges and opportunities for students as they stretch their musical range.

It's rare to meet a Music program in this day and age that isn't cutting corners--in terms of instruments, kinds of music, opportunities--to survive.

This request is a refusal to cut corners, and these instruments will ensure that, as my students grow deeper and more varied in their musical explorations, I can continue to provide them with the rich experiences they deserve.
