My Students

As a teacher in a low-income/high poverty school district, my students are faced with several challenges both in and out of the classroom. Despite the many challenges they face, I am working every day to provide my students with creative and meaningful learning experiences. My students are creative, clever, and spontaneous. They love to move, are eager to learn and love lots of positive attention. All students receive a free lunch based on their socioeconomic status. These things may prevent them from getting ahead early in life and may not provide them with the life experiences many of us see as "typical". From the minute they walk in the door of my classroom, I focus on their potential and growth while they are with me. I may not be able to control their home lives, however, I can certainly control their experience during the school day. By doing this in a creative and positive way, I am hopeful to inspire even our earliest learners to continue on a path of academic excellence.

My Project

Pets make us happy, and pets in the classroom mean a happier learning community. Research shows that human-animal interactions create calmer, better-focused, more social students. In fact, the presence of a pet — even in the form of a video, book, photo, or toy — leads to laughter, conversation, and excitement. Pets bring us together, and Mutt-i-grees — or shelter pets — contribute something unique to the equation. As living, loving lessons in resilience and hope, they are models of transformation.

This project will bring the Mutt-I-Grees program to our school.

Students will use the curriculum for social-emotional learning and humane education to become empathetic, resilient, self-aware learners. The program focuses on the themes of Achieving Awareness, Finding Feelings, Encouraging Empathy, Cultivating Cooperation, and Dealing with Decisions. Students will increase their ability to express feelings, communicate, and manage emotions.
