Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Give this project a boost!
A chain reaction of support starts with one share.
I am an itinerant teacher that works with students that are blind or visually impaired. My students range in age from preschool up to the age of 22.
Several of my primary students with low vision are reluctant readers but have fallen in love with the works of Dav Pilkey; my students have read the first three "Dog Man" books and are eager to finish the series and start the "Cat Kid" series.
The books are naturally in a large print that is accessible to my students; they do not feel different reading in front of their peers. My students are very engaged and have asked to take the books home over long breaks and weekends. I decided to write this project today when one of my previously reluctant readers shared that these books made him love reading.
Thank you for your time and consideration.
My Project
My struggling readers have discovered the works of Dav Pilkey and became hooked! My students that would make excuses to avoid reading are now devouring the "Dog Man" graphic series. My students are visually impaired or legally blind. Often large print books for children are incredibly large and embarrassing for struggling readers. We introduced our reluctant students to the "Dog Man" series when we returned to school from 19 months of distance learning. Many of our students in elementary school were struggling to read when we returned and did not have the motivation to practice. The "Dog Man" series have my students asking for more books.
