My Students

Do you remember the pain of being sunburned? While sunburns do hurt, this pain will go away however, DNA damage caused by exposure to UV radiation can lead to skin cancer. Please help my students make the connection between UV radiation and cell damage.

I teach students who vary from the gifted and advanced to those with learning, mental, emotional, and physical disabilities.

Students in this area are from families that are undergoing tremendous lifestyle changes due to the declining economic stability of the region. With the loss of jobs and homes, many families are struggling just to provide basic human needs and students at all levels are feeling the impact of these stresses both in and out of the educational environment.

My Project

In this laboratory experiment students explore how effectively different sunscreens protect yeast cells from damage caused by exposure to ultraviolet (UV) radiation. Through this hands-on experience, my students will cover three different fields of science, science as inquiry, physical science, and biology thus providing them with a broad and concrete understanding of multiple concepts covered throughout the year. Specifically, students will practice basic science inquiry by comparing differing SPF's of the same brand of sunscreen or different brands with the same SPF. The energy contained in electromagnetic waves and DNA mutations will be better understood by subjecting a strain of yeast that lacks several DNA repair mechanisms to UV light which induces mutations leading to cell death. Most importantly, students will better understand the importance of protecting themselves from the damaging effects of UV radiation through the use of sunscreen

Florida means sun and to much sun can be dangerous.

Knowledge truly is power. Giving students the opportunity to understand the scientific concepts taught through the use of these items will not only further their basic understanding of science, it can help them to make informed choices about protecting themselves from DNA damage through sun exposure and the importance of using sunscreen.
