My Students

If I had a dime every time I see a student not on the right problem or confused about where something goes on their notes, I would have a lot of dimes! It is time to change that.

I am the Gifted Zone Center Math/Science teacher for both 4th and 5th grades at my school.

My students travel up to 30 minutes on the bus each morning. Talk about commitment to learning! Our program pulls students from five surrounding school zones as well as our own. This means I have a very diverse group of students including those with 504s, IEPs, second language learners, and most importantly, hardworking families. Recently, our school was Title I. In my classroom I struggle with having enough supplies for each student to have an authentic hands-on learning opportunity.

My Project

I teach in a school that is lucky enough to have a Promethean Board for use in classroom activities. However, it is limiting for taking notes, particularly in math class. Students struggle with following along with printed notes when they cannot see a replica on the board. A document camera would allow me to show the exact notes on the board, so they can follow along and not write things down in the wrong place. When students write things down incorrectly, particularly in math, it messes up their understanding of the topic because they either mix up their numbers and/or label diagrams incorrectly. In addition, this will allow students to show their own process of thinking to everyone. Some math concepts can be done in different ways. When students can show off their thinking, they become more confident and stronger mathematical thinkers.

They will be spending less time trying to following along with the notes and more time contemplating the mathematical concept.
