Our school is a public all girls 6-12 school nestled in the heart of Atlanta and is a Title I School where 100% of the student population receive free lunch. The young ladies are resilient, they are the roses that grew from the concrete. They are inquisitive, full of energy, and optimistic about the possibilities outside of their immediate and sometimes harsh reality.
Despite the barriers they may encounter, these girls walk into our front doors where there is a full staff waiting to nurture their potential.
I have the privilege of serving a public all-girls school, where 100% of the student population are girls of color. In the beginning of the year, when I ask my students to draw a scientist, the majority of them draw an older white male... I am on a mission to change that.
I want my students, young girls of color, to see tangible representations of themselves in STEM fields.
In addition to culturally responsive and engaging STEM lessons, there are two ways I plan on accomplishing this:
1- By exposing my students to the inspirational women in STEM and their careers. My students need to be aware that STEM career opportunities are plentiful and growing.
2- By encouraging my students to pursue STEM majors in college.
My project, "Documenting STEMinists: I Am Because You Are" was inspired by the 1000 STEM Women project which is curating a video library where female scientists can record 90 second descriptions of what type of scientist they are and what they work on. The project hopes to provide an easily accessible resource for students to see some AMAZING female STEM role models.
Much like the 1000 STEM Women Project, I want my students to research past and current women in STEM fields and they will create a video library by recording themselves speaking about these women and their impact. My students will also create informational videos outlining the types of STEM projects they are involved with in order to share with the rest of the school community. The camcorder, microphone, and aux cord are to film the videos, the journals are for my students to plan the video library and for them to reflect on their learning experiences, and the books will be an inspirational start to this project.
