This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students are eager to show off their work. At the end of the school year, I want students to have the confidence to display their work to their classmates without asking me validate their work. "Don't let what you cannot do, interfere with what you can do." ~John Wooden

Currently I am a mathematics teacher in lower Manhattan.

Out of the students in my school, 5% are Asian, 26% are Black, 62% are Hispanic, and 5% are White. Six percent of our students are considered to be English Language Learners (ELLs). Twenty-one percent of our students are considered to be Students with Special Needs. Because the school is located in lower Manhattan, we have students who commute from Brooklyn, Queens, Staten Island, and the Bronx. Most of the students in my school are from middle to lower class families. Although our students face many adversities, they are extremely dedicated to their education.

My Project

The two items that I am requesting will substantially improve our classroom. The first item, the document camera, will be used to actively engage students in the learning process. The camera provides a quick and easy way to display student work to the entire class. Students will be able to analyze and critique each other’s work as it is displayed on the camera. Visual learners will be able to see how their classmates are arriving to their answers. Hands-on learners will be able to solve and explain math problems as well. The second item, the document scanner, will allow each individual student to have an electronic portfolio. This will be used to track student progress throughout the school year. When meeting with parents about a students’ progress, teachers can easily refer to the portfolio. Another benefit of having a scanner is the ability to quickly grade student work, provide important feedback, and email it to parents as well as the student.

Donations to this project will improve my classroom because it will give students the resources to help them track their progress throughout the school year.

Students will be able to use the document camera to explain their work to the class. Immediately demonstrating student work in the classroom will improve students' lives by raising their confidence. Higher confidence levels will improve students work ethics and student success.
