Document Camera to Document Learning

My students need this document camera to strengthen their annotation and analysis skills by watching teacher and peer modeling up close. It will also enable them to see visual primary sources in greater detail.

My Students

In J.K. Rowling's "Chamber of Secrets," Dumbledore advised Harry that, "It is our choices, Harry, that show what we truly are, far more than our abilities." I have this quote displayed in my classroom as a reminder that kindness, hard work, and persistence are all choices that shape who my students are as learners and individuals. I work at a gifted and talented school in East Harlem where my students are incredibly bright and motivated, and I believe it is my role as a teacher to guide them towards making choices in life that will foster a positive learning and social environment for all.

My students come from all five boroughs of New York City, and we are one of the most diverse gifted programs in the city in terms of race, ethnicity, and socioeconomic background.

My students all are greatly passionate about education and have big dreams to pursue careers in engineering, law, education, medicine, and politics; they are the next generation of leaders and changemakers! To get them there, we need your help in acquiring the 21st century tools that will help them develop the skills they need for success in middle school and beyond.

My Project

Annotation, writing, and analysis skills are fundamental in any Social Studies classroom, and they are also key to developing critical thinkers. Document cameras enable students to follow along as the teacher or a peer leader annotates a document or models other key literacy skills.

Document cameras, especially for visual learners, are a much more effective way to model literacy and annotation strategies, as opposed to giving instructions verbally.

Fostering good annotation strategies is key to helping students evaluate sources, determine credibility, and think critically about what they are reading; all of which are skills that are pivotal in the world we live in today.

Students will also be able to examine visual primary sources, such as maps, historic images, and artifacts in greater detail and with more specificity. This will bolster students' geographic awareness as well as enable them to be more engaged in history as they can now examine historical artifacts up close with the use of the document camera.
