My Students

I teach a lively group of 7th graders in a K-8 school. Many of the students have been together, in small classes, since kindergarten, and our graduating class each year invariably refers to the school as a "family." Our small middle school (just 64 7th and 8th grade students) allows us to focus on these lively, inquisitive kids as the individuals that they are, and work to meet their varied needs.....and now we're all at home.

Our kids are hanging in there, and I've been blown away by their creativity and flexibility: still, I can see how much many of them are struggling.

Not all of their homes are welcoming, comfortable places to be right now. Not all of them have access to the resources they need for daily life, as well as education. I am doing my best to keep them not only educated but entertained and engaged. I want to keep their spirits up as much as I can.

My Project

Even before I ended up teaching remotely, I wanted a document camera. Now it feels like an even more urgent need.

There are so many pieces of literature I want to be able to share with students that I simply can't, if they are not available online.

Read-aloud has been helpful, of course, but has its limits. A document camera would enable me to show pages from books as well as model annotation.

Also important is that I could share students' writing, and we could workshop it together as a group. I've found ways to do this in the classroom even without a document camera (though when we return the camera will be priceless!) but I really struggle in the online environment. My students, even as they are clearly struggling, are blossoming as writers, and I am eager to encourage their work.
