Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Every morning as I greet each and every one of my students and they enter the room, they look at the board to see what adventure we will be setting out on. Some days we take a trip to the rain forest or we blast off into space. It just depends on the day!

Everyday when my students enter my room, I hope that they will learn as much as they can but I also hope for it to be a safe place for them even if just for 6 hours.

My students are growing up in the heart of Washington Heights. Many of them are English Language Learners and so visuals that support their learning are extremely important. They also learn better when they work with manipulatives that support the concepts that they are learning. The students work very hard and are passionate about their learning. Our school does it's best to provide the students with current materials that support their learning however with budget restrictions, it is difficult. We currently have 2 document cameras for 900 students. This posses a problem because it is checked out on a first come first serve basis. With over 30 classrooms this is a bit of a problem. The staff at our school has worked very hard to achieve and stay as a school in good standing. We are currently an "A" school!

My Project

A document camera will help my students enormously. The document camera will help support the students in every aspect of their learning. In reading, it allows the students to share different text with each other. It also allows them to demonstrate different reading techniques to the class. It also allows them to share their independent or group work with the rest of the class. In writing, the document camera is used throughout the students' writing process. It allows the students to share their planning, their developing, editing and final published piece. It also allows for them to see different writing techniques and strategies that they would be able to use in their own writing. It also lets the class critique each others work. In math, the camera will allow students to show the different strategies and processes that they used to solve a math problem. It will also let the students demonstrate with manipulatives how they solved a problem (for visual learners).

By receiving this donation, it will not only improve my classroom but it will enrich the students' lives by allowing them to learn in multiple ways.

It will allow them to keep up with the ever changing standards and become career and college ready. This camera will be used everyday by the students and will benefit their education. This camera will give the students opportunities that they would not usually have because of where they live and their individual circumstances.
