My Students

Students seek to share their knowledge! Lack of confidence in their ability to share their knowledge is not a problem, but a route to capitalize on this strength is! We need your help to get a document camera for the class!

I work with the most precious kids in the building.

They have the greatest needs and are at the greatest risk. They struggle with concentrating, staying seated, even controlling their laughter, their frustrations and their tears. My kiddos with special needs are some of the most resilient adolescents you will meet. They are students are 5th, 6th, 7th, & 8th graders striving to climb that mountain to and through college. Most of them have transferred schools several times before finding us, in the hopes that their specific needs will be met this time. I have the best job in the world, and my kids are the kings and queens of perseverance, in every aspect of their lives. Despite the obstacles they face every day, they come to work for us every day, believing in our promise to get them to AND through college. Over 90% of our students are on the free/reduced lunch plan and to many students, our school is their safe haven.

My Project

Our first step to keep them on that path to and through college is getting our kids on grade level. We're constantly finding ways to creatively introduce new and challenging concepts to improve retention and enhance understanding of them. The use of a document camera would change the way we approach our lessons. One amazing thing about my kids is that they're not only willing, but eager, to share their knowledge with their teammates. In many of the classrooms at our school, you'll find students at the document camera, modeling their work for their teammates, explaining how they tackled a problem, or strategies they used to dissect a text. The use of a document camera in our room would not only provide a play-by-play guide to difficult problems/texts, but also a chance for my kids to share their knowledge with their teammates. A chance for my kids with special needs to remain engaged when confronted with challenging concepts that don't come as easily or naturally for them.

Student-centered, student-modeled activities means more student dialogue, which we know leads to higher achievement and student mastery.

It brings them one step closer to grasping that concept, and acing that ACT/SAT to be accepted to the college of their choice. Their education will change the trajectory of their life. They will have the power to change the world and their place within it! Thank you!
