This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I currently teach first grade at a Title I school on the southside of Chicago. I have 28 students enrolled in my classroom. The students mostly come from low-income homes and according to the Illinois State Board of Education 98% of the students at my school were considered low-income in 2010.

Help, we are in desperate need of a document camera for our classroom!

A document camera is able to magnify and project the images of actual, three-dimensional objects, as well as transparencies. This allows a teacher, lecturer or presenter to write on a sheet of paper or to display a two or three-dimensional object while the students watch it on a projector. They can engage with in any subject, we can use this for writing, literacy, math, social studies, science and art! Document cameras replaced overhead projectors, which were formerly used for this purpose, so please help our classroom move into the 21st century with innovative technology.

My Project

The Epson Document Camera will benefit my students in so many ways! The majority of my students are ELL (English Language Learners) students, which means that they are beginners in the English language. This device would be great because it would help them learn English by providing many visuals. Visuals are some of the best tools for teaching ELL students. Also, this would be a great addition for our classroom because it would provide my students with technology. Since I teach at an inner city school, that is overcrowded, the first extracurricular programs to be eliminated from our school were the computer classes, so now my students are not being exposed to technology in any aspect! They do not have computers at school or home and the “neighborhood” library which has computers is too far away! Just because my students are poor does not mean that they should not have the access or the opportunities to learn and interact with technology like the wealthier students have.
