Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Each day the students at Renaissance Community School for the Arts are welcomed into a school devoted to the success of each student. Students and teachers are excited to grow and learn together everyday.

Renaissance Community School for the Arts (RCSA) opened its doors this past September 2013 for grades Pre-Kindergarten to second grade.

All the students live within the same neighborhood near the school. A neighborhood that has a high poverty rate, violence, drugs, many cultures, and one of the highest drop out rates from high school in New Bedford. The staff at RCSA strongly believe that it doesn't matter what neighborhood you come from you can be taught to read, write, and graduate no matter what differences you have at home. There is another school within this neighborhood that every other elementary child in the neighborhood attends, we are actually currently within that school with our own entrance. Every year we will add a new grade to our school using the same lottery system that was used last spring to pick those currently in our school.

My Project

Having a document camera and projector in our classroom would allow the students to observe science experiments up close, participate in whole class review and share student work. A projector would allow us to incorporate video clips into our everyday learning. It also gives an opportunity to many of our English Language Learners to view new vocabulary and practice as a class incorporating new words.

Many students do not have access to technology at home.

Having a document camera and projector would expose them to new technology and help them become "tech savvy". It it critical that these students are exposed to all different elements of technology to compete in the 21st century.
