Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

A rich, warm, and chocolaty hello! Thank you for taking a peek at my proposal. I am a second-year "Teach for America" Corp member serving a Title 1 elementary school in Houston, TX. I teach 25 needy but spirited 3rd graders in a self-contained format.

At our school, books in general are a luxury. Class sets of books are virtually unheard of - the unicorn of our campus. This is a problem because most of my students are not reading on a 3rd grade level. They desperately need reading practice, by themselves, or with a partner. One of the best ways to help struggling readers is to have them listen to a fluent reader read. With a class set of books, I can be reading out loud while my students are following along in the book. "Chocolate Fever" by Robert Rimmel Smith is a great example of a text to use for this purpose, and it's incredibly engaging. In the story, Henry loves chocolate so much, it practically runs through his veins. Chocolate cake, chocolate cereal, chocolate syrup, chocolate milk, and chocolate cookies—and that’s just breakfast! Still, it comes as a shock when he suddenly breaks out in chocolaty brown spots and is diagnosed with . . . Chocolate Fever. And, rather than be poked and prodded by doctors, Henry runs away, starting the adventure of a lifetime. But at the end of it all, the question remains: Is there a cure for Chocolate Fever?

My students will never know if there is a cure for "Chocolate Fever" without reading the book; yet, I know the cure for my struggling readers and that's practice! I also know that you can help provide my students with this "cure" by helping to fund this proposal. I am asking for 30 copies of Robert Rimmel Smith's book, "Chocolate Fever." It would be amazing to have a class set of books to use with my students, and there is an added bonus. In 3rd grade, students in Texas take a very intimidating test known as the Reading "Texas Assessment of Knowledge and Skills" test or Reading "TAKS" test. I recently received a test practice unit based on "Chocolate Fever." If I am able to quickly get a class set of this book, I will be able to help my students not only practice reading but also get ready for their important exam.

As I noted, you can't know if there is a cure for what ails Henry without reading "Chocolate Fever." Yet, I know the cure for what "ails" my struggling readers revolves around reading practice. You can help provide our cure today by helping to support this proposal. Any small amount you may be able to contribute today will be helpful and greatly appreciated. Thank you for your consideration and I wish you peace in this new year.
