My Students

What is a just-right book? When a book is too easy for us, it doesn't challenge us to apply what we know. When a book is too difficult for us, we neither pay attention to nor comprehend the text. My kindergarten students need books that are just-right for their reading level too!

I teach kindergarten at an inner city school in Philadelphia.

Our school is in its third year as a turnaround school. Approximately 96 percent of students receive free or reduced lunches. The scholars that greet me every morning are intelligent, curious, and loving. Although my scholars face challenges, they are always eager to learn and focused on their lessons. They have a strong desire to attend college and know that HARD WORK = SUCCESS!

My Project

My bright and excited learners need to have a plethora of books on their reading level to choose from. Independent reading time is sacred! Providing students with at level books and comfortable reading spots is essential for daily focus and reading success. Books that are too hard or too easy aren't meant for this extra special time. But supplying my kindergarteners with books on their level is often very difficult. With an adequately filled leveled library and cozy reading spots, my students will make incredible gains in literacy!

My students are at a critical point in their literacy development.

My balanced, literacy block caters to their needs in a variety of ways but without these books that are on their level, they will not be productive during independent reading time. Help my little ones become readers!
