This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

This year my kindergarten classroom is composed of twenty-five students: 18 girls and only 7 boys! My students are energetic, curious, and eager to learn. They hail from different backgrounds, but they love being able to learn about the world around them together.

More than 80% of our students come from low-income households and, while parents and our school provide as much as they possibly can in order to ensure students are successful, sometimes it isn't possible to give more than they already have.

My Project

My students are an exceptional group! Many of them are already reading, so they are highly interested in books. During our literacy block, we use the Daily 5, which is designed for students to engage in a variety of literacy activities while I work with small groups. One of these activities is listening to reading, where students listen to a book on CD while they follow along with the printed text. At our listening center, students enjoy stories that tie into our social studies, science, and sometimes even our math units.

However, just two days ago, our CD player completely stopped working as students sat down to begin their activity.

Not only has our center rotation been thrown off, but my students are not getting the exposure to reading they normally do. The CD player I am requesting has multiple functions, including a cassette player, SB player, and a USB port, allowing me to bring in a variety of texts for my students to use. This CD player also comes with a built-in microphone that students can use to record their reading, which would add a notch of excitement to their reading experience. With your help, we could get a new listening center up and running in no time!
