Help Mrs. McMurray

My first grade class is in need of resources that will help them to become more independent readers and become more successful in completing literacy stations as I teach small reading groups.

My school is heavily populated with special needs students and students with English as a second language. These students often need more individualized and one-on-one instruction. It is difficult for one teacher to instruct small reading groups while also monitoring and giving extra directions to students working at literacy stations.

Students will increase reading proficiency, monitor their own growth, and stay on task more often during literacy stations with the use of MP3 players/recorders. First grade students will listen and read along with teacher recordings of targeted high frequency words, phonics and word building lessons, robust vocabulary lessons, examples of fluent reading from texts, and literacy station instructions. Students will also use MP3 players/recorders to record, listen to, and analyze their own reading of practiced texts. Immediate benefits of using MP3 players/recorders include the ability to replay directions and information as often as needed and to work at any pace. Additionally, English language learners and nonreaders will benefit from oral directions during literacy stations. Repeated oral directions will create more on task behaviors and eliminate the need to interrupt the teacher during guided reading lessons. Long-term benefits include increased reading rate with accuracy and expression, better use and understanding of new vocabulary, and increased interest and excitement towards reading.

Your help will aid my students in developing intrinsic motivation to become better readers through self-evaluation thus producing lifelong thinkers and readers.
