My Students

My students go to school in Southeast Michigan just outside of Detroit. My job is changing this year and unique in that I will be teaching 5th grade half a day and the other half of my day will be spent working with students who are struggling with math.

My students are inquisitive, self-motivated, and ready to learn.

81% of the students in our building are English Language Learners, many of them in the country for less than one year. More than 90% of my students are economically disadvantaged and qualify for free or reduced price lunch.

My students are learning to love math and science! These subjects are difficult for many of them because they lack the academic language needed. However, through hands-on activities, we are bringing new life to these subjects.

My Project

We are very fortunate to have a class set of Chromebooks housed in our classroom. Students use the Chromebooks several times throughout the day. Walking in to my classroom, you will see some students logged in to their computer working on a writing piece. Some may be practicing math facts, while others are listening to a story.

As you can imagine, it can get very noisy having students working independently on different tasks while I am working with a small group of students.

In requesting earbuds, my hope is to provide each child with their own pair of headphones to minimize background noise. Not only is this more sanitary than sharing a few pairs of headphones, it will also teach my students to be responsible and care for their equipment.
