Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Our students have diverse learning styles and a multitude of interests. Our students read on different levels and have access to a classroom library as well as online reading resources. Our students live in a low-income area in the South Bronx. They come to school eager to learn and we want to motivate them to be actively engaged in their learning by asking questions, researching information, and finding their own answers and opinions. Our classroom is an inclusive classroom, meaning we have some students with disabilities. Each school year we teach our students to be accepting of our differences and unique abilities. They collaborate in groups and learn to work together.

We want to encourage our students to find their voice as readers, writers, mathematicians, and leaders so that they can go back to their families and their community and make a positive difference.

My Project

With the onset of the pandemic in 2019 came remote learning. Our NYC students received devices (whether an iPad or a laptop) to assist them with remote learning. Now, in 2021, we have returned to the school building and are all adjusting to a "new normal" in our classrooms. This includes incorporating technology into our daily lessons and embedding opportunities for online learning into our daily routines. Our students enjoy learning from individualized programs like iReady and reading along with stories on websites like GetEpic. They like challenging themselves through virtual games and doing research through science videos and websites. However, in a classroom of 20+ students it is difficult for students to concentrate with the sounds of all of the other devices going at the same time. Not only will the headphones provide students access to listening to only THEIR program of study, but it will also block out some of the other distractions around them. Headphones will be used to make sure our students are able to focus and concentrate on their online work. They can be sanitized at the end of each school day and reused by the students each day throughout the year!
