This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Do you remember when you were learning the letter sounds? Do you remember learning how to sound out words or to say rhyming words? Probably not, but these are skills we know and use everyday without thinking twice about it. My students are trying to learn these skills.

I teach kindergarten in a elementary school in California.

My class consists of students who are English language learners. Many of my students come from a household where no one in the family speaks English. Other than the time they spend in my class they have few chances to practice speaking, listening and reading in English.

My Project

Many students who enter kindergarten, wither being proficient in English or not, have little to no reading or phonic skills. In kindergarten they learn the letter sounds, sound blending skills, sound differentiation skills, word families and identifying and creating rhyming words. Everyone inherently uses these skills on a daily basis to sound out difficult words when reading, or when writing words we are not sure how to spell. These basic skills are the foundation of learning anything else in life but they do not come naturally, they must be taught. Today's kindergarten class is no longer playing and nap time as it was in the past. Now kindergartners are held to rigorous state standards as grades 1 - 12 are held. By the time they leave kindergarten, my students are expected to be able to read short decodable books and write simple, coherent sentences.

My current listening station consists of a CD player, 3 headphones, a few CDs from my reading program and a word skills listening kit I purchased at an education store.

I am requesting the Listen & Learn Letter Sounds Activity Program and the Listen & Learn Phonemic Awareness Activity Program from Lakeshore Learning. These kits will help students learn the letter sounds, letter formation, recognizing rhyming words, beginning and ending sounds, and sound substitution. Thank you so very much!
