Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

Unlocking the Mysteries of DNA: Empowering Diverse Learners Through Hands-on Biotechnology. This project aims to equip our diverse student body with the tools and experiences to explore the fascinating world of DNA analysis through hands-on electrophoresis experiments. The requested supplies will make a difference in student learning by increasing engagement since the hands-on nature of electrophoresis will captivate students, transforming abstract concepts like DNA and genetics into tangible, real-world experiences. This will foster a deeper understanding of scientific principles and increase student engagement in science. Improved Critical Thinking & Problem-Solving will also be addressed since electrophoresis requires careful planning, precise technique, and meticulous data analysis. Students will develop critical thinking, problem-solving, and analytical skills as they design experiments, interpret results, and draw conclusions. Enhanced Scientific Literacy will be covered by engaging in authentic scientific inquiry, students will gain valuable scientific literacy skills, including data collection, analysis, interpretation, and communication of scientific findings. This knowledge will empower them to make informed decisions about their health, the environment, and the world around them. Finally by

addressing Diverse Learning Needs, this project will cater to diverse learning styles through a combination of hands-on activities, visual aids, and collaborative group work.

This inclusive approach will ensure that all students, regardless of their learning styles or backgrounds, have an opportunity to succeed.

My school population as per the NYC Department of Education statistics is comprised as follows: 27% Black, 67% Hispanic/Latino, 1% Asian, & 2% White. 28% are students with disabilities (vs. 17% city-wide) , 3% self-contained (vs. 2% city-wide), 13% English Language Learners (vs.11% city-wide), and 88% Economic Need Index (vs. 71% city-wide). Those are the official, rigorous statistics. Through my eyes they are engaged, willing to learn, respectful, future citizens. Obstacles they face in and out of the classroom are always challenging.
