I love teaching science! I teach 7th grade Life Science, 8th grade Earth Science, and the after-school science club. Last year, our science club participated in several free activities at the DNA lab at a local university. It was so cool and the kids learned so much about DNA. The neatest activity involved extracting their own DNA and placing it in small vials attached to plastic laces and worn as necklaces. The kids really enjoyed it and were able to tell all of their friends about DNA when they returned to school. DNA is a very abstract, difficult subject for most 7th graders, but they are required to learn about DNA as part of the state science standards. This DNA necklace activity would help my students not only connect DNA to themselves, but it would also reinforce the scientific method, which comprises 40 percent of their year-end exams. The problem is that we submit our materials requests for the budget in March and there is no additional funding for non-essential materials or activities. In addition, new kits are not usually approved in our budget requests because of our limited tax base and the initial start-up costs of kits; however, refurbishment of existing kits is always approved provided the kit addresses state science standards, which this does. Your donation of these materials would allow us to integrate the activity into our yearly curriculum so that students could connect the abstract concepts of DNA to a hands-on activity that we can maintain through yearly refurbishment. The start-up cost would cover 5 sets of the DNA Necklace Kits. Each kit has supplies for 25 students, which would supply the 100-120 8th grade students that I usually have each year, and the consumable materials could then be included on my yearly budget request. This would be a great, exciting addition to our curriculum. Students could enjoy learning about DNA, relate it to the real-world, and practice following exact lab procedures in order to obtain the desired results. That's a lot of learning in a little package.
