DNA Electrophoresis

My project needs DNA Gel Electrophoresis equipment. Biology students will be able to experience cloning, isolating and identifying DNA sequences in the same way forensic investigators, geneologist and genetic engineers do.Understanding the molecule DNA and the characteristics of inheritance that it has is a central objective in every biology course.

DNA has revolutionized human understanding of life. From crime scene investigation, questions of paternity, ancestry, to cures for inherited conditions. High school biology students are expected to understand and use the genetic code to find answers to these type of questions in order to be a well informed citizen. Without the proper equipment enabling the student to manipulate in a concrete learning experience, the concepts remain abstract and 'unreal'. Practicing the manipulation of DNA also helps students identify future career interests and goals for future education to reach those career goals. In a DNA gel electrophoresis lab, students take real strands of unknown DNA, clone them, chop them up using restriction enzymes, use electricity passed through a gel to separate the fragments and then identify these fragments by comparing them to a standard reference. The requested materials are required in order to perform this highly technical process. When students do real scientific techniques in the classroom they get a real experience of what real scientists do. Even if they do not see themselves as scientists in the future, they have a better appreciation of what scientists do and they can make more informed decisions in their everyday life. Students also become more realistically aware of their own genetic potential and become empowered to understand the results they are experience from their own genetic code and understand those with different experiences because of their different code.
