Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Our students are a remarkable group of 6th through 12th graders at an inner-city school in Washington, DC. My school caters to students from all over our nation's capital. Learners in my class come from a variety of backgrounds, and many of them are bilingual. Often times, it is the students who are teaching me. This helps make going into school every day a joy.

Despite the minority and low-income status of the majority of our students, our school is dedicated to preparing all of our students to go to college.

Many of my students are learning English as a second language, and most need hands-on experience with the content in order to be ready to take on college-level work.

My Project

Learning about DNA is an integral part of any high school Life Science curriculum. The materials requested will help my students run analysis that illustrates the structure of DNA fragments (size & charge) and the sort of work that they can expect from college lab sciences and beyond.

Understanding how our DNA works means understanding more about ourselves and those around us.

Every year I have a handful of students who are interested in studying health sciences. I am fortunate enough to be able to provide these learners with a robust, hands-on laboratory curriculum. The one piece that I have been looking to add is the electrophoresis chambers and their ability to analyze DNA fragments.
