My Project

This proposal requests funding to acquire a set of djembe drums for an after-school club where students will explore music and the rich cultural traditions of francophone West Africa. Through hands-on learning, students will develop musical skills, cultural awareness, and a sense of community while fostering appreciation for global traditions.

Music education enhances cognitive and social development, yet many students lack access to diverse musical experiences.

Our after-school program aims to bridge this gap by providing students with opportunities to engage in drumming, a fundamental element of West African culture. However, to ensure meaningful participation, we require a set of quality djembe drums. These instruments will allow students to practice, perform, and fully immerse themselves in learning rhythms, songs, and stories from francophone West Africa. Additionally, this program aligns with the students' French class curriculum by reinforcing their understanding of francophone cultures, expanding their vocabulary through music, and providing a real-world application of their language studies.

The after-school club will meet weekly and include the following components:

Musical Instruction: Students will learn djembe drumming techniques, traditional rhythms, and group coordination skills.

Cultural Education: Sessions will include lessons on the history, language, and cultural significance of drumming in West African communities.

Community Engagement: Students will showcase their learning through performances at school and local events, promoting cultural appreciation.
