This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I have entered into a new school year, teaching a new grade and have a new group of students. I am getting to know them in a virtual setting, and their little personalities are starting to shine. My students have always been my inspiration, as they push me to think outside of the box to develop learning experiences to meet their varying interests and diverse needs.

I teach at a Title I school where I am lucky enough to get to work with such dedicated and hardworking students.

I also get to partner with a group of supportive parents and equally supportive staff who share the common goal of creating a learning environment where all children will succeed!

My Project

I am requesting a set of Micro:bits, the hardware that will be used to engage students in coding in the Microsoft MakeCode platform. Students will be using these materials from home, while I will teach them computer science virtually.

After learning how to code the hardware, students will create a DIY STEM project by integrating the Micro:bit into fashion, toy making, music devices, and/or robot designs.

Creativity and originality will be encouraged and supported.

The IF/THEN DIY collection will be a source of inspiration for students. Students will watch the videos, and think about how everyday items can be transformed into creative STEM projects. What is even more exciting is that the DIY collection is lead by a female, and girls get to see themselves in a STEM world in the media!
