My Students

Welcome to my teaching world! I teach at MELS in Queens, New York. Teaching in one of the largest cities in the world is incredibly exciting, challenging and rewarding. We currently have 6th grade through 12th grade. One of the things I love about teaching in Queens is that students are from a wide range of economic, cultural and linguistic backgrounds.

My students demonstrate not only a diverse array of backgrounds but also come from a wide spectrum of background knowledge of science and state assessment scores.

My Project

My 6th grade students need to understand the complex systems involved within the diversity of life. What better way to explore these interactions than through hands on vertical farming? We will be exploring the various materials and designs by building of a DIY hydroponic system.

This process will help us better understand our world, experimental design, and dynamic equilibrium between living and nonliving things.

We will be using the pumps to bring water and the nutrient solution from our reservoirs to the hydroponic window system. Students will create mini living units for the plants by cutting recycled bottles with the x-acto knifes, adding plastic baskets and the clay rocks. Finally, we will attach the bottles to the wire cables attached to the top of our window frame completing our DIY hydroponic window farm.

Your generous donation to our project will improve our 6th grade science classroom by giving students real world application of their knowledge. This will change our students' lives for the better because they will act as scientists and feel as if their work contributes to a healthier and more sustainable community.
