African drum beats pulsate through the hallways. Clothed in vibrant colors and patterns, at-risk students shine and bring an energizing awareness of a different culture to the rest of the students and staff through multiple performances. The commotion of the drumming and the visual costumes create an inviting atmosphere to learn more about the African American culture in a rural mid-western farming community school that is 99.7% Caucasian. I wish to create an after school program for at-risk students that will introduce the African American culture through music, art and drama. The program will feature purchased African Drums, student-made costumes, field trip to Purdue University Black Cultural Center and performance instruction from an invited professional. This program celebrates a study of African culture and fosters awareness of diversity. The Diversity's Beat after school program allows our generally lower students to succeed in a new light by allowing them to demonstrate their newly formed abilities to the rest of the students and faculty. I am a visual arts teacher at a rural Indiana kindergarten through fifth grade elementary school. We are fortunate to have Purdue University as our neighbor and I have already made arrangements with the Director of the Black Cultural Center of Purdue University to work closely with us on this endeavor. I also have ties with local musicians and thespians that will be on board to donate their time to this program. The music teacher in my building is willing to donate her time to teach the African Spiritual music. This program can be successful with your financial help! The program will need to purchase drums for the student's use. They will need fabric, dyes, beads and paint to create their tribal African robes. For the music facet of the program, they will need to purchase Octavos. The students will also need money to cover the field trip transportation to and from the Purdue University Black Cultural Center. The need for learning other cultures is essential if we want to teach tolerance and compassion. This program will cultivate learning and appreciation of others and themselves.
