Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Our school is located in an area of low economic development. Over 90% of our students are growing up in poverty. Books and resources are scarce in their homes. But they come to school every day eager to learn and to apply their new skills.

In Kindergarten we are laying the foundation for all future skills!

Every day we are learning letters and sounds that will help us read. We are learning to count and graph, which will begin their understanding of math skills. All our activities are hands-on letting the student discover and discuss as they are learning.

My students are not growing up with the same experiences their counterparts in the wealthier parts of town are privy to. When they walk in the first day of school they are still learning how to write their names, the letters of the alphabet. We work very hard to get these students reading, writing and adding on grade level. The problem is we need hands-on resources and books to get them there. They need to practice their skills on a daily basis in order to become successful.

My Project

These books will be placed in our classroom library for students to read themselves and also be used as read-alouds in class. I also allow students to check books out and take them home to read with their families.

I have seen students go straight to books with characters who look like them.

It's important to have a library that describes cultures from around the world. Students can read about adventures of all different kinds of people.

I am requesting books like Fry Bread that talks about Native American traditions. Hair Love which is a about an African American family dealing with family changes and the Proudest Blue about the tradition of wearing a hijab in the Middle East. I believe these stories will help my students develop empathy and tolerance which is such an important need in our world today.
