My Students

I teach 99 9th grade students. I work in a small, rural, farming town with a population of around 4,000.

While students in my district are bright, wonderful individuals, the population lacks diversity.

Many students are unaware of life or opinions outside of our small, farming town.

Over 94% of the population is Caucasian. We have a small percentage of ELL students, mainly of Hispanic heritage and only a few African American students as well.

The main differentiating factor in the high school is socioeconomic status. Fifty percent of my students receive free or reduced lunch and only 68% of students continue education past high school.

My Project

We just had a project funded to create literature circles that are based on diversity. This is huge for my students as we live in a small, rural area! I'm so excited for the opportunities and discussions this will bring for us.

My students are excited about the novels they have available to them, but I have the ability to provide two more great diverse novels to bring education and empathy!

We have about $100 left over in giftcards, so I decided to create one more project to include two more highly recommended diverse young adult novels.

Students will choose the novel they want to read. The current topics they can choose from include disabilities, Middle Eastern heritage, Jewish heritage, American Indian heritage, and refugees. The last topics I would love to include in the literature circles are African American heritage and someone representing the LGBTQ community.
