A chain reaction of support starts with one share.
I am a speech-language pathologist who provides speech therapy services to students in the developmental preschool program as well as Kindergarten to 5th grade in general education classrooms. These students of various age groups and from culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds have a variety of speech and language challenges they face daily at school. However, they are never afraid of challenges. They are motivated and hardworking. They would always persevere in my therapy sessions. All of them are now back in their school buildings and excited to be learning in person this year. Many of them told me that they are striving to meet all if not most of their IEP goals and I am looking forward to help them achieve that.
My Project
Having students with a variety of needs (e.g., articulation, stuttering, language expression, social skills) from culturally and linguistically backgrounds, I strive to always be consciously open-minded and sensitive to every individual's cultural and language background.
Representation within the materials I use in speech therapy is important to me and my students.
I want my preschoolers and K-5 students to see and find themselves being represented in the books that I chose for them. At the same time, there are a plethora of opportunities to work on their speech therapy goals, such as developing early literacy skills (e.g., pointing, turning pages), practicing speech sounds while reading, answering questions and retelling stories to improve language expression, improving social thinking through discussion of morals and themes. The printer ink will also allow me to print colored materials such as graphic organizers and interactive materials (e.g., pictures that students can hold onto) while reading through each book to increase understanding and engagement. The laminating pouches would be immensely helpful for the current pandemic situation (i.e., hygiene) as well as for future reuse purposes. With them, I can laminate the colored materials and reuse them multiple times with different students by cleaning them with soap and water. This would especially benefit my preschoolers who tend to easily crumple or tear up their materials.
Thank you so much for considering to donate to this project! My students and I are grateful for your consideration, time and generosity.
