Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Our school focuses on students with high academic needs. We are an elementary Title I school. The students within my school reside in a low, socio-economic environment and deal with various personal issues while simultaneously struggling to fulfill academic obligations. My classes incorporate a diverse ethnic mix of students. Students are of African/Black American, Latin, African, and a mix of other ethnic backgrounds. Classes consist of a small percentage of students on grade level and a very large percentage of below grade level students. Classes include special and general education students. In addition, there is an abundance of students who enroll as English Language Learners on all grade levels. I teach differentiated English Language Arts lessons daily within this diverse learning environment.

This year, I will be teaching literacy through theater arts (live instruction combined with remote learning).

I will also be teaching reading intervention at all grade levels (live and remotely). Theater will expose and allow young students to learn through figurative language, story elements, poetry, stage production, puppetry, music, and dance. They will read, write, listen, and speak through dramatic play, which will have a great learning impact on our student's backgrounds.

My Project

At the start of this school year 2021-2022 we will again be returning to in-person teaching and learning while at the same time dealing with the real pain from this continuous global pandemic called Covid19. On the other hand, we are also experiencing even more pain relating to the massive amount of racial uprising going on around the world and in our youth’s communities. My goal is to stop youth from growing up repeating the mistakes made by my generation and past generations.

I’d like to be an educator who helps my students understand that no matter a person’s social or ethnic background or gender, we all have a place in this world.

Our differences are what makes us beautiful and what makes us shine. It is important to alert today’s children and awaken them by teaching them about tolerating, recognizing, and nurturing the diverse world they are growing up in.

My plan is to do this by inundating their learning environment with as much diversity as possible by adding diverse visual decoratives such as posters and bulletin boards that have images and colors that reflect their skin color and culture. I will often teach cultural awareness lessons coupled with engaging activities. I am hoping the books will captivate them and encourage them to read more and more often. These books tell stories of little brown and black boys and girls that look like them and share their struggles. They will allow them to mentally travel with characters. They will help them establish relationships and learn tolerance towards others of different races, cultures, and traditions. My students need to understand that we are all in this together and no matter what our differences are, together we can make this world a better world for their own kids.
