My Project

Reading is the path to power and change. Books that show the diversity of all students should be a part of the curriculum. Diverse books will help my students become agents of hope and acceptance. We need books in our class library that will enhance their learning and understanding of the world. I love that my students are avid readers. They are receptive and talkative about the books they read. These new books will be used in class to study language arts, writing prompts, and social studies standards. Having these books in class is important because not every family can afford to own them. Every child should have literature that is not remissive or stereotypical and provides experiences and opportunities for understanding and developing pride in their heritage.

Making sure that children see themselves in culturally responsive books helps them to know that their history matters.

Change starts with our young students discussing diversity and equity because these students are becoming aware of differences in the people around them. They are starting to form their ideas about racial inequality and gender stereotypes. Multicultural literature provides empathetic experiences to cultures other than their own.

Some books are windows and help kids learn about other people. These books can help kids have a deeper understanding and an appreciation for other people.
