My Students

My third-grade students go to a wonderfully diverse and collaborative public school in Brooklyn, New York. Our school works hard to help our students become problem solvers, creative thinkers, and socially responsible citizens of their community and the world.

My students are avid readers who love engaging in incredibly rich discussions about their reading!

However, the books in our classroom library do not currently reflect the diversity we see in our school community and in the world around us in Brooklyn.

I would like to acquire more books with Asian and Asian American characters to help spark my students' interest in learning about different cultures and allow them to feel more connected to the diverse community they are a part of!

My Project

Children find role models not only in their parents and teachers growing up, but also in the characters in their favorite books. These role models are incredibly important in helping children learn and grow into strong and confident young people. Children’s worlds will not only grow from reading books about diverse characters, by so will their sense of kindness and empathy, as well as their self-confidence.

My students and I have found that our classroom library lacks many books featuring Asian and Asian American characters.

I am looking to acquire powerful read alouds that highlight Asian voices and perspectives.

Not only do diverse characters teach all kids about being compassionate and inclusive, but they also help my students from all races and backgrounds feel confident in themselves. Having more books with Asian and Asian American characters will be beneficial to the social and emotional development of ALL my students, and I am excited to get these books into their hands!
