Diversify Our Collection!

Help me give my students at the school for the deaf some great books this year to diversify the collection such as Lee and Low and Fearless Trailblazers. We are going for 40% diversity and 10% digital.

My Project

Our school was decades behind with outdated and concerning titles when I started fourteen years ago. Books about minorities were scarce and books about First Nations people were sadly not very nice. After fourteen years of weeding and purchasing and getting donations we are still five years behind in updating nonfiction and only at 30% diversity - our goal is 40%. There are long lists of favorites and requests as well and I'm told it's a tight budget year. I still don't know what that means but it will be at least half of what we're used to getting which was barely enough - or less. There are so many rules about where I can buy and how I can buy that getting cheaper books is also not possible - third party issues - so anything will help! I am looking forward to our mystery genre theme this year - Watch the dog - both Benny's Watch and our school dog back in the 1940's named Watch which I've written some easy readers for with photos will be used for emergent readers (with language delays) from 3rd to 8th grades.

In addition, we hope to buy some other new easier to read chapter book series depending on the budget.

I've requested those through the Amazon portion. We have been underfunded so long, I didn't think we'd ever catch up and then we got some extra COVID funds and I brought the collection from 20 years outdated to 10 years outdated but another budget crunch will put us right back where we were.
