My Project

Our elementary is striving to put books into the hands of our diverse student population. We want to ensure that all students have choice and ownership of engaging literature based on their unique personalities. We want to provide every student with the opportunity to obtain books for home. This grant will fortify our efforts to increase literacy by acquiring books that align to the individual interests of our students.

We believe that families play an essential role developing literacy in our students, therefore we aim to bridge the gap between classroom learning and at-home support by providing our students with diverse books.

We endeavor to give families the resources, knowledge, and confidence they need to nurture their child's literacy development. Having diverse selection will allow students to choose books according to their interests and that reflect their own experiences.

Currently our school is engaged in a program to increase families’ capacity to support reading outside of the classroom. This is the Family Literacy Engagement Pilot Program. This program hosts two family Literacy events (fall 2024 and spring 2025) with a book distribution for the first 70 families at our school. So far, this has been a wonderful project, yet as our *numbers reveal, this is only a drop in the bucket. In addition to this program, our school has offered other ways for students to receive books. During our school orientation/open house students had the opportunity to select free books from the library. We saw many happy faces that night. In addition to this, throughout the school year students receive a birthday book of their choice.
